Brock Purdy etched his name in the San Francisco 49ers record books on Sunday against the Washington Commanders. The quarterback needed only 229 passing yards to set a new franchise record for the most passing yards in a single season. Purdy surpassed that mark in the fourth quarter, breaking the record of 4,278 passing yards set by Jeff Garcia in 2000. Purdy has 4,280 passing yards as of this post.

Notably, Purdy accomplished the feat in 16 games, not requiring the 17th game of the season to break the record. It's even more impressive when you consider that Purdy is only in his second NFL season after becoming a starter in December of 2022.

Purdy is only the third quarterback in franchise history to throw for over 4,000 yards, joining Garcia and Steve Young, who did it in 1993 and 1998.

With his two passing touchdowns against the Commanders, Purdy also became the first 49ers quarterback to throw at least 30 touchdowns in a season since Jeff Garcia did so in 2001 (32 TDs).

San Francisco made Purdy the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He entered last season as the third quarterback on the depth chart, with injuries thrusting him into the spotlight late in the season.

Depending on the outcome of the game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles, Purdy may have an opportunity to add to the record next weekend against the Los Angeles Rams.

Does 49ers QB Brock Purdy need Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel for success?

By David Bonilla
May 15

Rumors circulated before and during the 2024 NFL Draft about the possibility of the San Francisco 49ers losing one of their top two wide receivers—Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel. Such a scenario could have significantly impacted the team's success in the upcoming season and posed a potential blow for quarterback Brock Purdy, who has thrived alongside the dynamic duo on the field. However, none of these speculations came to fruition. Both Aiyuk and Samuel remain on the roster, at least for another season, though their future beyond that remains uncertain. Aiyuk is seeking a contract extension that would position him among the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL. At the same time, Samuel already commands a significant salary following a deal rework in 2022.

Steve Young on keeping the 49ers competitive after paying Brock Purdy

The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up to elevate quarterback Brock Purdy to their highest-paid player status starting next year. Negotiations for a contract extension with the young signal-caller, entering his third NFL season, are on the horizon. Purdy's on-field performance has far exceeded his current salary. Last season, he set a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance while earning a base salary of $870,000. Even for the upcoming season, his salary will only bump up to $985,000. That may sound like a lot to the ordinary person, but it is only a fraction of the team's salary cap. However, Purdy's next contract is expected to catapult him into the ranks of the NFL's highest-paid players. That title

Is this QB's deal a template for Brock Purdy's impending 49ers contract?

By David Bonilla
May 8

Tim Kawakami fielded questions from fans in a recent mailbag for The Athletic. One curious fan wondered what a new contract for Brock Purdy might look like and if the San Francisco 49ers quarterback might aim to become the NFL's highest-paid player. Of course, the term "highest-paid" is subjective. It typically refers to the player with the highest average salary per year. However, long-term deals can be more complex. They often start with low salaries to save the team salary-cap space early in the contract and then increase over time. Additionally, some later years may not be guaranteed, as teams can include exit points or restructure
